ACC Hesitant to Host Asia Cup 2022 in Sri Lanka Due to Political Heat

The 15th edition of the Asia Cup was to be held in the island nation of Sri Lanka. However, due to the current political situation in Sri Lanka, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is hesitant to host the Asia Cup 2022. As a result, the decision was taken at the ICC meeting.

The ICC board meeting is currently underway in Dubai. There may be the talk of the Asia Cup in a gap of discussion. All members, including ACC president Joy Shah, are currently in Dubai. As a result, the discussion will be quite easy. However, it is not yet known which way the Asia Cup will go.

This year’s Asia Cup 2022 was scheduled to be held in August-September this year. The screening of this year’s Asia Cup in Sri Lanka was scheduled to take place on August 26. The last date of the tournament was September 11.

Differences have been brought in the format of this year’s event. Keeping in mind the T20 World Cup, this time the Asia Cup will be held in the format of T20 format. The last event was held in 2016 in ODI format.

The 15th edition of the Asia Cup was to be held in 2020. It is delayed due to coronavirus. Then it was decided to organize it in June 2021. However, the event was postponed due to India’s participation in the final of the ICC Test Championship. The postponed event will be held in 2023.

This year’s Asia Cup will be for six teams. Apart from the five Test-playing nations of Asia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, an associate member country that has passed the qualifying round will also get a chance to participate.
